Compaction Meter The Compaction Meter consists of a stainless steel probe or rod connected to a hydraulic piston, which slides within an aluminium housing. This housing is fitted with a stainless steel tee bar and pressure gauge with a dial. The operator presses down evenly in the tee bar pushing the probe into the soil/ Pressure on the hydraulic piston transmits a reading on the gauge in PSI or bar pressure indicating the level of compaction. Different coloured bands on the gauge dial show instantly low, medium an high levels measured. USA research has shown that anything over 300 PSI can be detrimental to root development, yet readings of 500-600 PSI are not unusual and even 1000 PSU plus are quite common on sports turf surfaces. The Compaction Meter probe is marked off in 3 inch (75mm) intervals so that compaction at all levels down to 24 inches (60cm) can be measured accurately/. Working your way for instance, across a golf green or football pitch probing at regular intervals with particular attention to problem areas such as goal mouths and excessively dry or wet patches, will pinpoint those areas in need f intensive aeration/ decompaction. |
